Here’s a picture front and back of a date wheel. The numbers are printed on the front and it could possibly happen that they were not centred on top of the notches. The notches themselves would almost 100% be uniform, in that one or two gaps are unlikely to be wider or narrower than others. Looking closely at the '28' you can see one of the detents that positions the date wheel. If the gears are undamaged but the date is still not aligning properly, it is due to dirt or old lubricants and the movement doesn't have enough torque to force the detent into those slots.
