Which PAM is most iconic for the BETTARINI era?

The Luminor cases (sometimes referred to as “Bettarini cases,” named after Alessandro Bettarini, who was the head of Panerai’s mechanical design department in the nineties) have shorter lugs, a downward sloping case band, and a flatter crystal.

The 44mm Bettarini case is my grail, which means I have numerous watches I would consider roughly perfect. I currently own three of them. Pictured below are 562, 176, 510. The 562 and 510 are both early model sandwich dials.

Arguably the most iconic Panerai case style, the Luminors is typically what are thought of when “Panerai” is heard. Currently, there are 3 variants of the Luminor case style (disregarding size): Bettarini, 1950, and the 1950 “Vintage/Base”.

The Panerai PAM 590 takes on this characteristic and therefore has a dial inspired by vintage models. Another reason to fall for it. In summary, our Luminor has a “Bettarini” case, a “non matching” dial and an “8 Giorni” inscription.

The Panerai Luminor PAM 1048 is for those who might want to join the legion of Panerai collectors – the famous Paneristi – but for whom a 44mm-plus watch might be a bit daunting. At just 40mm (and 15.5mm thick), the PAM 1048 is still pure Panerai.
