After about 2 weeks of rainy weather in Zurich, I just felt like capturing the moment and saying ‘hi’ to everyone with a quick wrist shot - What’s on your wrist today and how do you feel about the 39mm Explorer?
With the buzz surrounding the “new” Rolex releases (specifically, their decision to discontinue the 39mm and revert back to the 36mm sizing), I started to have doubts on whether the 39mm was the right size for my wrist. While 36mm is the classic size for an Explorer, I had always felt the 214270 was sized just right for me.

The above two pictures illustrates my 6.5" flat wrist with my 39mm Explorer. Since the distance across my wrist is ~51mm, the lugs do not extend beyond the confines of my wrist bones. Taking a closer look at one of the most iconic and influential sport watches of all time. I wanted to like it, but I just can't. In fact, my ideal Rolex doesn't exist: a 39 DJ. Actually the 41DJ in reality is a 39mm. Well that may be so, but it’s bigger than the Explorer 39, by quite a bit. So what I’d want is a DJ the size of my MK2 ;) Not too much differences is size. https://youtu.be/DapjT7iEWBg.
However when the 39mm Explorer arrived, its proportions were indeed altered, but to my eye, not to the same scale of the Subs, SDs GMTs, DDs and OPs. Side by side, the 39mm does look chunkier, but on the wrist it's very elegant. .
